More than half of SA population (61%) reliant on social grants – study

Bruce Whitfield discusses the Brookings research, which relates to South African statistics on social grant recipients in 2020. He is joined by Flux’s own Bronwyn Williams, who sheds some light on financial and business trends observed during the pandemic.

Bronwyn notes that “the big jump came with Covid when we opened up our grants to people who are unemployed”. This will undoubtedly have a knock-on effect on the way businesses and governments deal with crises in the future
