Understand the world, Understand Gen Alpha.
Workplace conflict with Gen Z might be the current bugbear for businesses but Flux Trends suggests you also keep your eye on Gen Alpha. If you think tech savvy Gen Z’s are changing the status quo in retail, social justice issues and company culture, then Gen Alpha will surprise you. They have leapfrogged a few steps ahead.
Who is Gen Alpha?
Born between 2010 and 2024, these are the children of the millennials and the oldest Gen Alpha’s are already 14-years old. If Gen Z’s were the first digital natives of humanity then Gen Alpha’s are already the “old souls of cyberspace”: digitally armed, able to weaponise AI, and wise beyond their pre-teen years.
Retail brands have already started speaking to them (“targeting” them would be foolhardy) and surprisingly the first brands to engage with them were from the financial services sector.
Many have already started their own Social-commerce businesses and manage their own income streams. Pocket money has morphed into “disposable income” and marketeers have to rethink the traditional ‘nag factor’ or ‘pester power’ associated with purchases for this age group.
They have agency.
Change the World (and your business model)
Why are they so important?
For retailers this is not your future shopper but one already crossing the virtual threshold of your business. Incongruously, young girls are obsessed with anti-ageing products and regimes, and toy makers are already pivoting to MESH (mental, emotional, social health) toys. YouTube is their preferred streaming platform, which has major ramifications for companies like Disney,
Gen Alpha is the largest African generation so understanding them is crucial to your future business. What do they eat / wear / watch / listen to and where do they shop?
Most importantly, where and how do you connect with them?
(Hint: Roblox is arguably the Gen Alpha “town square” and has 77.7million daily active users (DAU’s) in 16 languages across 190 countries)
